goal

a new design concept based on experiences with earlier projects was used in designing and building the nursing home “mediana”. the main goal was individually providing the clients with everything according to their needs and creating the option to integrate everyone in everyday life.

concept

the architectural design concept includes as main task the reproduction of normal everyday situations. all functional areas - urban space as much as individual accommodation units - were implemented in one single building. the connected central function areas consist of:

  • household - living in 12 households/housing groups
  • accommodation units - private and community areas for individual use
  • hall - vertical urban space/ market space/meeting point

households/housing groups

housing groups can act individually. a lounge area can be used for collaborative activities, for example meals, fancywork classes, cooking and baking classes, games, seminars, movies, tv evenings etc. in the summertime these activities can be done at the terrace/loggia as well. it is - like the kitchen area - connected to the lounge area. the kitchen area is barrier-free and can be used by catering personnel, relatives or the clients themselves. medical care is coordinated by the nurses in the hall (nursing ward).

accommodation units/single rooms

10 barrier-free single rooms are planned as private, individual retreat areas. every room holds a complete bathroom and is aligned either to the east, south or west. all windows reach down to the floor in order to create a well lighted, friendly atmosphere and provide the clients a view outside even when resting in bed. every accommodation unit comes in the dimension of 30m² and can be furnished individually. it is possible to connect two accommodation units into one apartment in to be used by for example couples.

hall

the centrally arranged hall has a versatile “urban” use. it is public marketplace for the clients, visitors and a meeting point. it also connects all accommodation units. the generous spacing horizontal and vertical stresses the wide and open areas of the whole building and allows everyone to enjoy the various plants and park - like arrangements supported by the paved footpaths.

the medical care of the accommodation units is organised via care stations in this hall. due to the central arrangement of these stations effective operation and management is possible.

next to the hall but still in the same functional area the administration is connected with the internal infrastructure (ground floor). further functional support of the building is provided by a café, hairdresser, foot care, etc. also located centrally. the café connects the hall with the plaza like entrance zone in front of the building.
